Tuition and Financial Aid
As an independent school, Havern does not receive funding from local or state governments. To offset educational expenses, we charge tuition for each student. However, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating each student. Gifts from alumni, parents and friends provide funding that supplements tuition and ensures Havern’s financial strength.
Havern’s tuition is competitive with other private schools focusing on students with learning disabilities and is also indicative of the quality of education provided. Please contact the school for current tuition rates.
Because Havern utilizes an intervention model, some families may qualify for a medical tax deduction on tuition and/or mileage to and from the school. Please consult your tax advisor to learn more.
We recognize the financial investment in Havern is a significant expense for many families. Qualified students should not be deterred from applying for financial reasons and families applying to Havern are considered without regard to financial circumstances, giving all applicants equal opportunity for acceptance. Through payment plans and need-based financial assistance, we work toward making the Havern community accessible to children with diagnosed learning disabilities in Colorado.
Parents are invited to apply for student scholarships through the Havern Tuition Assistance Fund. Havern’s financial assistance program, established in 1970, provides tuition assistance to a portion of qualifying families through direct tuition assistance grants and no-interest payment plans of up to 12 months.
The Financial Assistance Committee of the Board of Directors reviews each family’s financial situation and for the 2016-17 school year, Havern awarded more than $300,000 in financial assistance to 25 percent of our student population.
- Once a student has been offered and accepted a place at Havern with a tuition agreement and deposit, the family may apply for financial assistance.
- Tuition assistance funds are limited, and awards are based on a family’s verified Adjusted Gross Income and other circumstances are taken into consideration.
- The process of financial need assessment begins with submission of family financial information through the School and Student Services portal of the National Association of Independent Schools, typically in the early spring of each year.
- Full tax documentation for the prior year is a major component of the assistance application. March deadlines do apply.
- The Financial Assistance Committee considers all the complete applications in early May, and allocates awards based upon funds available. Financial assistance awards are for one year only and each year the application process must be repeated.
- Many of our families have found portions of their Havern expenses to be income tax deductible as medical expenses under IRS Publication 502. Please consult your tax professional regarding your own situation.
- Havern feels deeply its obligation to be good stewards of its limited financial assistance dollars. Therefore, financial assistance cannot be counted upon to enable discretionary family priorities such as vacations, asset acquisition, or other indicators of an upper income lifestyle.
