Student Life

We’re Here to Help You Learn to Learn

From the minute students step inside Havern School in the morning, they are surrounded by a caring staff and friendly fellow students. A smiling staff member will greet every child when they arrive each day. Then, they head to their classrooms for morning planning time.

Each day will include small group instruction in reading, writing and math. Depending upon the day of the week, the school day may also include time on the climbing wall, an art class, library time, a music or drama class, speech-language or occupational therapy, or a social skills group. Every day will have at least two extended periods of time for recess; to relax, to visit the playground, to play an organized game or to walk a lap of the campus path for exercise. Lunch for downstairs classes is held in the community room; lunch for upstairs classes is held outside at the picnic tables (in good weather) or in the classroom.

Throughout the year there are many fun activities that make Havern special. A few of the special traditions, include:

  • A pancake breakfast for students and teachers to kick off the year
  • Making a huge spider web in the gym in Speech/OT (SPOT)
  • Baking pies for a huge Thanksgiving lunch
  • The student council puts on a school dance for the whole school
  • Every student participates in a drama performance
  • Middle school goes to Keystone Science School year spring
  • Field trips and assemblies

After school, students may choose to join in Variety Club (for downstairs classes) or Homework Club (for upstairs classes). Or children may participate in LEGO® club, science club, basketball club, choir, art club or a private piano lesson. Every minute of the day, children will be among adults who truly care and students who face a learning challenge.

“Havern teaches me in ways that I can understand.”
